Welcome to Rowboat, proprietary software for parsing, examining, storing, sharing, and visualizing data files. Rowboat is provided and controlled by Rowboat LLC, a Massachusetts limited liability company, acting by and through its managing member Ben Fry LLC d/b/a Fathom Information Design, a Massachusetts limited liability company (together, the “LLC”, “we”, or “us”).

This Privacy Statement explains what information the LLC collects about you through Rowboat and our website (the “Site”), how we use that data, and when and with whom we share it. The Site includes all pages within the rowboat.net and rowbo.at web domains (together, the “Web Domain”).

What data do we collect?

We collect a limited amount of information that you provide to us. The information collected will depend on how you use Rowboat and the Site. You may provide us with the following information:

Rowboat does not collect additional personal data or the content of files processed through Rowboat. In order to prioritize ways to improve Rowboat, we collect certain data relating to the use of the software, including, but not limited to:

Rowboat also collects a small amount of information outside of Matomo. As you are unable to opt-out of this collection, please carefully review the below description of what is being collected and why:

The contents of files that are opened and saved on Rowboat are private to you until you choose to share them. Opting to share to a file using the "anyone with the link" share option will allow anyone who has been given the URL the ability to view the contents of that file. Rowboat will not access the contents of any files you have shared using the "anyone with the link" share option without your written permission unless required by law. If you opt to share a file using the "invited users only" share option, only you and those you have chosen to share the file with will be able to access the contents of the file. Invited users must be signed into the Rowboat account associated with the email address that the file owner has granted access to in order to open the file.

How do we collect your data?

We collect data when you use or view Rowboat and/or the Site.

The Site uses Matomo to collect and analyze traffic and help us to improve your user experience. Matomo is an open source web analytics platform. A web analytics platform is used by a website owner in order to measure, collect, analyze and report visitors’ data for purposes of understanding and optimizing their website. Data collected outside of Matomo is gathered directly via Rowboat’s software and is securely stored on a server solely controlled by the LLC.

How do we store your data?

Data is stored securely on a cloud server solely controlled by the LLC. We have implemented appropriate technical and organizational controls to protect data from loss, misuse, and unauthorized access or disclosure. Unfortunately, sending any information, including personal data and personally identifiable information, via the internet is not completely secure. While all information is passed in an encrypted manner, given the nature of communications and information processing technology, the LLC cannot guarantee that data during transmission through the Internet or while stored on our systems or otherwise in our care will be absolutely safe from intrusion by others.

If you choose to delete your Rowboat account, you will immediately lose access to all features associated with your account. Attempting to create a new account with an email address associated with a deleted account will result in the restoration of the deleted account upon confirmation from the account holder via email. Deleted Rowboat+ accounts will reactivate as free Rowboat accounts. Files saved to a Rowboat+ account will be permanently deleted upon account deletion and will not be restored if the account is reactivated.
